THE BAY AREA BOOK FEST held on the UC BERKELEY CAMPUS GREEN

Sunday, June 4,”THE BOOTH OF RUTH” will welcome visitors.  I will be there working with my watercolors.  I’m looking forward to meeting visitors in a casual environment of encouragement and conviviality while discussing the joy of watercolor painting.

In 1972 the Booth of Ruth first appeared in Laguna at the Winter Arts and Crafts Show on the grounds of the Laguna Festival of Arts in Laguna Canyon.  Because that month was cold, rainy and windy, I brought along a quilt I was appliquéing using the image of the old Newport Cannery from a painting hanging in the booth.  Not only did the quilt keep my knees warm, but I was working with art.

The book, RUTH HYNDS, WORKING IN WATERCOLOR will be available for purchase  at my booth while the limited supply lasts.

December 2015 http://www.ruthhyndswatercolors.com/december-2015/ Sun, 06 Dec 2015 23:51:25 +0000 http://www.ruthhyndswatercolors.com/?p=348 It’s nice to hear from so many of my collectors.
At last: San Francisco – I have had the good fortune to locate to a dramatic location on a Berkeley hilltop. Below me to the left is a view of the south Oakland bay, next the Bay Bridge approach to Yerba Buena Island with the City skyline beyond it to the west. Continuing right, the Golden Gate Bridge meets the Sausalito headlands, which leads past Angel Island to where Mt. Tamalpais appears in the background.
Although of course I sketch all this in pencil or ink washes, my daily work involves an ongoing interest in creating fairy tales of elder wisdom.
In 2016 I will enter my mid eighties and find myself enjoying this anonymous quote:
“Live like someone left the gate open.”
Continue to let me hear from you,
Ruth Hynds

April 2014 http://www.ruthhyndswatercolors.com/2014-post-by-ruth-hynds/ Sun, 06 Apr 2014 22:20:19 +0000 http://www.ruthhyndswatercolors.com/?p=290 Springtime in Northern California looks like winter one day, then like summer the next.  These changes constantly encourage new expression and I am no exception.  A fairy tale I began thirty years ago is occupying my time this spring.

The story itself is engrossing me, and I am attempting a three dimensional statement of it as well.  Using core board, handmade decorative papers, glue, rulers, and  books on handmade books, I’m enjoying solving the construction of a basic unit.  It’s a joy shopping in an art store here called Riley Street which I formerly used for my watercolor needs.  In a month or two I’ll have something worthy of exhibiting and announce a venue in the Santa Rosa art scene.

Orders for my first book, Working in Watercolor, continue to come in.  In addition enjoyable comments about the rereading of it are being received from collectors, which make the endeavor justifiable.
